Ferric Chloride

Alright, I've been doing some research to try to find a way to refine the course bite of the ferric chloride. I may have found it. Ferric Chloride is also known as Edinburgh Etch, and research done in 1997 to try to eliminate the sediment created in the etching process also reputedly found a way to refine the quality of the etch to razorsharp exactness. And ba..ba..bum the magical mystery ingrediant is citric acid. I have yet to try it yet, but I plan on doing so shortly. The title should link up to the webpage where I found this info and much more, but if it doesn't this info can be found at: www.polymetaal.nl/beguin/mape/edinburgh_etch.htm

And I might add there is also a way to duplicate aquatint tonal effects with a variation of the citric/ferric chloride solution doing only a straight bite without any rosin or lift technique

Curious!!! I will check out your info site. mom v

Checked out the web site. I learned some new things from it. Thank you! Viper. It sounds like this etching solution would take away the pretty blue fumes you get when you put an aluminum plate into a nitric dip.Ahh...to bad, but you are probably healthier for the change of solution. Bye!

Can you tell much of a difference from past etchings done in nitric and the recent ones in the ferric chloride?

The Ferric chloride etch seems chunkier/blockier to me than what Nitric does. Also unlike the Nitric you must be careful of the sediment. The sediment can build up on the surface of what you are etching and block activity.

Oh, and I might add that the plates themselves will look different. Nitric etches have that wierd orange color, Ferric chloride etches are black.

May I simply say what a relief to discover someone who actually understands
what they are talking about over the internet.

You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
A lot more people must check this out and understand this side
of the story. I was surprised you aren't more popular because you definitely possess the gift.
